WE ARE MICK & LIANNE,
TWO SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS WHO FOUNDED BASE IN 2017.
We operate from our beautiful country town of Bungendore, NSW. The concept of Base was born at the conclusion of a PhD and the growing independence of our first daughter. We shared an urge to combine our working lives in a project for which we could both be proud.
At the time, we were surrounded by calls to support charitable causes overseas. Where were the calls to address equivalent issues here at home? There was no shortage of public conversation surrounding ‘closing the gap’, more specifically, our inability as a nation to make definable progress on the issue. Perceived helplessness became the spark to try in a different way
Social enterprise was the appropriate business model. We weren’t the experts with boots on the ground and the right tools to address the causes of this social inequality. However, we could assist those experts. The phrase ‘stick to what you’re good at and do lots of it’ was prominent in our planning. But what could we do? Soap?
Many years prior, a DIY soap making experience generated some Christmas gifts, and the result was better than predicted. Was there a greater market for this type of soap on a larger scale? A few farmer’s markets later and chance interactions with retail owners set us on a path of no return. Annually, we now hand make tens of thousands of bars for Base and other select brands. Our products can be found on a growing number of shelves around the country and overseas.
Base employs a growing number of passionate soap and social impact enthusiasts. Our organic growth model means all profits are rolled back into the growth of our brand so that, in the near future, we can start to share stories of real impact on the lives and communities of fellow Australians.
Our mission is to empower regional and remote communities by providing funds that support positive health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. We aim to empower consumers to solve problems and create a better world through their purchasing behaviour. We want to create quality soap that enriches people’s lives by caring for skin, the environment, and the health of our regional and remote communities.
